Soothe and Restore: Why Silver Is The Ultimate In Skin Care

21 Dec 2011

Healthy skin is the beginning of a healthy body. The skin is the most important organ of the body and is oftentimes the most prone to problems and injuries. Through the skin we come into contact with our world—bacteria and other potentially harmful organisms included—and it is crucial that we are able to keep the skin clean and functioning properly. Of all the minerals known to be helpful to the skin, silver is becoming recognized as one of the most effective soothing and cleansing agents.

Before we go farther, let me introduce myself. My name is Melissa Robertson, and I am new to both Mountain Well-Being and to the use of colloidal silver. A skeptic since birth, I have reluctantly agreed to try some of MWB’s products for myself. I took a bar of our silver soap home about a week ago, to see if I would have any luck getting rid of some ringworm I contracted from the gym locker room. Not only is my ringworm gone after only one week, but my skin is noticeably smoother and softer to the touch, and a small breakout of bumps on the backs of my arms has cleared up completely. Amazed and curious, I had to know just how the silver was so effective in cleansing and conditioning my skin. What I discovered about the topical uses and benefits of silver was incredible.

The cleansing and restorative properties of silver have been demonstrated in the medicinal as well as cosmetic disciplines. Used as an antimicrobial agent for centuries, silver's widespread medical use came to the fore in the early and mid-1900's and has continued to be used, in the form of silver sulphadiazine, as the primary treatment for burns. The silver treatment helps to fight off infections that can quickly develop in burns and helps the burned skin to heal more quickly. A study conducted by the US Army on animals that suffered from burn wounds shows that those animals treated with silver dressings healed more quickly than those without. The study also showed that, when an electrical current was applied to the silver dressing, the recovery time for tissue was even quicker.

Since silver is not an essential mineral and not made by the body, I didn’t understand how silver could help the body in tissue repair, nor did I know where the Army got the idea to use an electrical current. As it turns out, the electrically-charged silver treatment is a method developed and patented by Robert O. Becker in 1998. Becker’s research shows that when silver ionized by an electrical current comes in contact with an open wound, it signals fibroblast cells (scar tissue cells) to become stem cells. The silver also connects with living tissue in the wound, which produces “immediately convertible” stem cells. These stem cells then become mature tissue in the wound instead of scar tissue, resulting in the restoration the skin instead of a scar tissue patch.

The silver treatment study really sold me on the effectiveness of silver to heal burned tissue and keep it free from infection; but burns are not the only wounds that can become infected, and I wondered if anyone was making silver bandages for every day cuts and scrapes. Some bandage companies, such as Silverlon, are making silver-lined gauze and band aids, which are yielding great germ fighting results. In a comparative study conducted by NAMSA (North American Science Associates, Inc.), the effectiveness of a leading brand of band aids, with and without antibiotic pad, against the Silverlon brand silver-lined band aids on three highly resistant bacteria showedthe silver-lined bandages consistently inhibiting the growth of all three strains of bacteria, while conventional bandages either completely failed or showed little effectiveness. For those not feeling the need to buy special band aids online, the application of colloidal silver to a regular band aid yields similar results.

Many of our customers who have tried our colloidal silver skin products, especially our silver soap, rave about these and many other benefits.Around the office here at Mountain Well-Being, Jonathan thought it would be fun to list, from head to toe, how many ways he uses his colloidal silver products.
